Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States? While this is a sobering fact, I’m a firm believer that knowledge is power, and the more knowledge you have, the better prepared you are to keep yourself healthy and strong. Aside from focusing on cardiovascular exercise to keep my heart strong, I make a conscious effort to incorporate heart-healthy foods into my diet.

I know you’re probably thinking ‘how good can heart-healthy foods taste?’ Well friends, if you enjoy salmon, dark chocolate, olive oil, or avocado, you enjoy a handful of the many delicious heart-healthy foods out there. While I’m a lover of salmon, dark chocolate and olive oil, one of my favorite heart-healthy recipes features avocado as the star ingredient.

If you’re looking for a nutritious and filling meal, I recommend you give my Avocado Salad a try!

Heart-Healthy Avocado Salad Ingredients

2 large organic avocados

1/2 organic red onion, chopped

2/3 cup organic tomatoes, diced

1 cup organic black beans, drained

2 tablespoons organic toasted sesame oil

2 tablespoons organic balsamic vinegar

1 teaspoon organic herbed sea salt/veggie seasoning

2 organic crushed minces cloves or garlic (or 1 teaspoon garlic powder)

dash of organic lime or lemon juice

Directions

In a small bowl, whisk together the toasted sesame oil, balsamic vinegar, lime or lemon juice, herbed sea salt or veggie seasoning and garlic (minced or powder). In a separate bowl gently combine the avocado, red onion, tomato and beans. Drizzle the liquid mixture over the vegetable mixture and stir well enough to ensure all the veggies are well-coated.

Serve as is, atop of bed of leafy greens, tucked into a wholegrain pita or use it as the protein portion of a burrito bowl!
